Q:  If I have the voluntary or forced filter, can I use NetSpeed?

A:  Currently, because both of these services work on a proxy server, they cannot be used simultaneously.  We are working on options around this.  The technology is not quite there yet but we're getting close.

Q:  Will Netspeed speed up everything I do on the web?

A:  Netspeed accelerates text and graphics on web pages as well as POP3 and SMTP E-Mail. With Netspeed you will notice a significantly faster experience when you visit web sites, read your e-mail, send e-mail, and perform many other Web-based activities. Netspeed will not currently accelerate file downloads such as music files and streaming media because these files are already compressed.

Q:  How fast is Netspeed?

A:  The exact amount of acceleration can vary, but with Netspeed you will notice a significantly faster experience when you visit web sites, read your email, and perform many other web-based activities.

Q:  How do I start Netspeed?

A:  If you are using the Windows version, Netspeed is launched automatically every time your computer starts. You do not have to launch it manually. The Netspeed icon appears in the Windows system tray to show that it is operating in the background. If you are using the Macintosh version, you can start Netspeed by opening the Netspeed program which is located in your Applications folder. For quick access to Netspeed, drag the program's icon to your dock.

Q:  How do I change the image quality setting for a particular image?

A:  Right-clicking on an image within Internet Explorer and selecting "Show Original Image" allows you to view the original image.

Q:  How do I change the image quality setting for all images?

A:  Right-click on the Netspeed taskbar icon and select "Settings". Select the "Image Quality" tab. Adjust the slider bar to the desired image quality setting. Press OK to save the changes.

Q:  What do the numbers displayed in the Statistics dialog mean?

A:  The statistics dialog box shows you how much faster your connection is with Netspeed turned on. The Bandwidth Savings Ration tells you exactly how much faster your Internet access is while using Netspeed.

Known Issues:

Q:  Why does my downstream "Bandwidth Savings Ratio" appear to go below 1.0?

A:  Accelerating your bandwidth channel incurs a small amount of transmission overhead. In most cases, this overhead is negligible when compared to the actual bandwidth savings provided by Netspeed. However, strange interactions between Internet Explorer and certain plugins (such as the old versions of the Adobe Acrobat Reader plugin) may cause documents to be unnecessarily downloaded twice. It is important to note that this type of behavior occurs regardless of whether Netspeed is used. Netspeed is merely showing the download statistics in these situations.

Q:  Why do some Java-applets (such as certain games on www.pogo.com) not work?

A:  Older versions of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) cannot display certain image types (such as 'PNG'). To fix this problem, simply set your image slider to the maximum quality level or upgrade to the newest JRE.

Q:  Does Windows Update work with Netspeed?

A:  You can not use Windows Update while Netspeed is on, however, you can simply right-click the Netspeed icon and choose "Stop Netspeed" and Windows Update will work normally. Just turn Netspeed back on when you're done.

Q:  Does Front Page work with Netspeed?

A:  Netspeed will interfere with Front Page in Edit Mode.  If this is an action you would have to perform often, you would have to weigh this inconvenience.  If using Frontpage is not a common occurence, simply disable Netspeed and reenable after your updates.  If you decide Netspeed is too cumbersome for use with Frontpage, please contact us at billing@freedomisp.net  or call 1-866-487-0068 to cancel your Netspeed service.
